CMS Releases Five Star Changes Today

Jackie Pappalardi and Lisa Volk in Clinical & Quality

Today the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will add an alert icon on Nursing Home Compare to centers that have been cited for one of three abuse and neglect F-tags (F600, F602 or F603). CMS will also remove the short-stay and long-stay resident pain measures from the Five-Star Quality Rating System, which may impact your star rating.

If a facility is flagged with an alert icon, the survey component will be capped at two stars. Due to the methodology used to calculate the overall rating, the best overall quality rating a facility flagged for abuse can have is four stars.
